Hello everybody, new to the forum and joined specifically to get some advice from in the know individuals. Im sorry if Im posting in the wrong area but couldnt see a specific area for technical problems. I bought my 2005 6 series convertible in July 2013 and have developed a number of niggly little problems that I was hoping someone might be able to give me advice over. I know I could take it to the dealership, but this is a gigantic pain in the behind, and Iv had bad experiences before where Iv been ripped off. I was hoping someone on here might be able to tell me how serious or minor some of my problems are.

Most of my faults are electrical, and so I am wondering if, rather than several different problems, they are symptoms of one general problem. I will list the electrical problems I have acquired and I would be grateful if anyone would be able to tell me if they are linked to the same root cause:

Heated wing mirrors and heated rear window does not work
Cigarette lighter does not work
Regular problem with drivers window anti-trap. Regularly fails to move up and down on opening the door and entire electrics fail to windows intermittently (found some previous advice on this and a regualrly able to reset the window, which works for a while, then the problem occurs again)
Left rear fog light failure
Left reversing light failure
PDC failure (worked until a few months ago)
Key fob for central locking and alarm disarming has never worked from the moment I bought it - so had to disable the fuse to the alarm to stop it going off every time I got into the car (tried several tricks from youtube to sort this problem)
Passenger side wing mirror no longer tilts down when in reverse

I also get the very occasional transmission problem with an alert, reduced power, but seems to be fine again when I use it on the next journey. Iv also started getting a whirring noise as I get to the high revs like the transmission isnt happy (though drives fine) - could this be something simple as transmission fluid as Iv never driven an automatic before?

My left front dipped headlight went a few days ago, but there is some condensation in the headlight after I took it to a carwash, and when I looked earlier it had the occasional attempt at flickering, rather than being completely out - I thought it was just the bulb at first but wondering now if this is part of a bigger electrical problem?

Obviously I could take the car to the dealer and get all these things fixed, but Iv had to put it off as money is really tight at present and its difficult for me to give up my car for a long time. I doubt whether, if there was a simple electrical problem at the heart, that the dealer or a garage would say anything like 'dont worry mate, we just need to replace fuse number 10!' Its in their interest to find as much wrong as possible.

So I was hoping someone on this forum with a good knowledge of 6 series technical issues might be able to advise whether all these problems are seperate, or symptoms of one bigger (but possibly simpler problem)

Many thanks for any advice!

These sound like separate problems to me. If you're stuck for cash, how about taking it to an indie? Or you can get a code reader on ebay (not as expensive as the professional one) and plug it into the OBD port and that'll at least diagnose some of the main faults. If you spend say ÂŁ30 on a reader, you'd still save money, because some places charge you ÂŁ100 just for a diagnosis.

So the saga continues. Took my car to a garage yesterday, mainly to investigate a chronic minor oil leak I have had. Last garage I took it to said there was too much oil to see where it was coming from and that I needed the underchassis steam cleaning. I rang round a few places, noone did it, then I saw a few things that said this could cause problems so I left it. Anyway, finally got onto it after a garage said they could jet-wash the underside.

Been told that the leak seems minor and that I need a new sump plug, but to get this done during its service else all the oil will come out, so best done during oil change at service.

They checked my battery and alternator and said they are both fine.

Problem is they have made an incidental finding. The exact language they have used on the report is

"Engine coolant is boiling over - unable to carry out chemical head test but showing signs of head gasket failure on NS bank"

Iv been told this needs to be fixed by an engine specialist as he is not equipped to do it. Was reluctant to quote me a price but estimated about ÂŁ2000.

Does this sound about right? Think taking it to BMW with this problem is not a good idea? Better off with an independant?

Also, weirdly, this morning my heater does not seem to work anymore, fans come on, but only cold air which was never a problem before. Anyone have any insight on this problem?

Any advice on any of this would be appreciated, but it would seem the battery /alternator theory has been refuted. Not sure where to go next

Sounds to me like low coolant, there's not enough to fill the heatercore so there's nothing to transfer heat from the engine to the cabin. Which doesn't sound great if it's got a suspected head gasket leak.

A few of your other problems sound to me like a dying battery but if it's been tested?
