If I remember right, you can check by lifting off the covers just behing the seat belts (this is where the hardtop rear pillar spikes fit into). There should be two circular metal lugs under these covers. Not the springloaded covers that slide with the opening of the roof, the smaller ones that sit behind it. On one side. there is a wire connecter on one of the circular lugs that allows operation of the heated rear window. As part of the hardtop preparation, this changes the operation from blower through the rear vents to hrw. If those circular lugs aren't there, it is not hardtop prepped.
A word of caution, when you buy the roof, very carefully check the rubber seal on the leading edge particularly where it joins the A pillar and along the rear for any wear or damage from poor storage. If there is any damage, chances are it will leak like crazy! :jaw-dropping ....walk away.
I hope you get the hardtop, I think they make the car look fantastic! Better than the Coupe in fact but that's just my opinion.
My old e36 cabbi, now sadly gone.....
